About Us

MP9 Asset Management is a boutique asset management firm based in Durban, South Africa. We provide a wide range of asset management solutions, private client portfolios, derivative instruments and cash solutions.

Our team possesses a wealth of financial market knowledge and our value add is a result of our combined experience of over 60 years.

We aim to generate consistent robust returns, while controlling risk, at our core is a strong focus on preserving capital.

Our story:

MP9 Asset Management was founded in 2007 by Manoj Parekh.
After completing his articles, Manoj ventured into the commercial property sphere for 5 years before joining Merrill Lynch in 2000.

In 2007, with the benefit of years of experience, Manoj decided to launch his own asset management business and to do things his own way.

What we do

Private Clients

MP9 Asset Management has partnered with Legae Peresec, this give us access to local and offshore markets, with the ability to construct sophisticated portfolios as well as trade a wide of a range of asset classes.

Our clients have direct access to their portfolios through Legae Peresec’s online platform. They can view their portfolios in real-time and have access to an extensive range of market and company research tools.

Private clients have the option of mandating us to operate discretionary or non-discretionary accounts.

A discretionary account gives MP9 Asset Management the responsibility for investing and trading financial instruments on behalf of the client. This means that all buy and sell decisions are made by MP9 Asset Management.

Clients with non-discretionary accounts take the decision-making responsibility on themselves.

Background

Investment Philosophy

We are of the opinion that markets do not price securities efficiently at times. This allows us to apply our refined bottom-up fundamental analysis to establish and take advantage of opportunities.

Our focus is on value investing in the South African market, we are also active in searching for opportunities in offshore markets.

At the core of our approach is intense risk control, and although it is futile to attempt to predict economic outcomes, continuous revision and stress-testing of our portfolios allow us to be well positioned for a multitude of events.

We outsource peripheral functions which allows us to maintain focus on the management of client portfolios.

BEE

BEE schemes of JSE-listed companies have been the most attractive equity class in South Africa.

BEE schemes generally have wide discounts compared to their JSE-listed parents and based on conservative assumptions, offer double digit returns over a few years.

These BEE schemes are intricate, and in most cases, geared instruments in prime underlying businesses (Vodacom South Africa, MTN, Multichoice South Africa, Sasol).

Large South African companies have launched BEE schemes which are now traded on exchanges. Qualifying investors can trade freely in these instruments. MP9 Asset Management manage the assets of a qualifying company which invests in these instruments. Investors are offered the opportunity to purchase shares in this company.

As there is a limitation on who qualifies as an investor in these companies, they tend to trade at material discounts to their intrinsic underlying value. In many of the schemes, the restricted shares convert to ordinary shares(which anybody can buy and sell) in a specified time frame. If market conditions are reasonable these companies could deliver a return 15 – 20% per annum higher than owning the equivalent share on the JSE, and certain potential investments have high prospective dividend yields.
